On Thursday, former President Trump dropped hints about a shortlist of contenders for the role of Defense Secretary, should he secure the presidency again.
Trump dialed into conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, where Hewitt listed potential Republican candidates such as Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas, Representative Mike Waltz from Florida, and ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Trump made it clear he has numerous options. “I have many good choices. I have four or five good choices. You named a couple of them. And they’re very good. A lot of really very good choices,” he remarked.
Elsewhere in the interview, Trump said that he might contemplate pardoning Hunter Biden if he’s victorious in the 2024 election.
“I wouldn’t take it off the books,” he commented to Hewitt. “See, unlike Joe Biden, despite what they’ve done to me, where they’ve gone after me so viciously … And Hunter’s a bad boy.”
“There’s no question about it. He’s been a bad boy,” Trump continued. “But I happen to think it’s very bad for our country.”
Hunter Biden was charged in June with three federal gun offenses and also confessed last month to several tax-related crimes, with sentencing hearings slated for December.
Earlier this year, President Biden stated that he would not pardon his son.
Additionally, Trump told Hewitt that if he retakes the White House, he intends to immediately terminate special counsel Jack Smith, who leads the criminal cases against Trump for the Justice Department.
“You’re either going to have to pardon yourself, or you’re going to have to fire Jack Smith,” Hewitt questioned. “Which one will you do?”
Trump said the answer was “easy,” and indicated that Smith was a “crooked person.”
Trump also hinted he had the opportunity to take legal action against Hillary Clinton when he was President.
“And when they say lock her up … What did I do? I always say take it easy, just relax,” he remarked. “I could have had her put in jail. And I decided I didn’t want to do that. I thought it would look terrible.”
