In a Fox News town hall that aired on Wednesday, former President Trump sought to claim credit as a defender of the fertility treatment that conservative Supreme Court justices cast into uncertainty by overturning Roe v. Wade.
He referred to himself as the “father of IVF.”
In the aftermath of the Roe ruling in 2022, Democrats have taken offense in two areas: abortion access and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Trump participated in a town hall with women from Georgia, during which they inquired about his stances on the topic.
“I want to talk about IVF. I’m the father of IVF, so I want to hear this question,” Trump said.
In response to a participant’s inquiry regarding his stance on IVF, Trump disclosed that he received a telephone call from Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), whom he described as “a fantastically attractive person from Alabama.”
“She said, ‘I was attacked. In a certain way I was attacked. Explain IVF very quickly.’ And within about two minutes I understood it. I said, ‘No, no. We’re totally in favor of IVF.’ I came out with a statement within an hour. A really powerful statement … and we went totally in favor. The Republican Party, the whole party.” Trump stated.
This call occurred subsequent to an Alabama court ruling earlier this year that determined that frozen embryos are considered individuals with rights.
Consequently, IVF clinics in the state were compelled to suspend their services.
