Both Megyn Kelly and Reagan actor Dennis Quaid contended that former President Donald Trump shares significant similarities with the late President Ronald Reagan, despite acknowledging that the two are also vastly different individuals.
Quaid appeared on The Megyn Kelly Show to promote his latest Reagan biopic, which is currently playing in theaters.
The duo viewed a renowned video of Reagan at a 1980 debate, which Reagan funded with his campaign funds. During the debate, Reagan declared, “I am paying for this microphone!” as he and the moderators disagreed on the number of candidates who could participate.
Kelly and Quaid contended that the moment is one of Reagan’s most famous, and it showed him as a political renegade, a comparison to Trump in 2016.
“I’ve also said I’m voting for Trump, but I’m not going to lie, Trump is not the same character as Ronald Reagan. You can stick with the marriage alone to see,” Kelly said.
“I’m totally with you on that one. The presentation is totally different and I think it reflects the times of which we’re in now. You couldn’t say a four letter word on television six years ago and now you can. You can say anything you want,” Quaid said in response.
Quaid went on to claim that, at bottom, Trump’s principles were “very much the same as Reagan.”
“The thing about Trump, I’ve even cringed at some of the things that he says — but at the same time, I will say that the principles that Trump has are very much the same,” Quaid said.
“You think, where is a leader like that? Well, he was more complex than that and Trump is more complex than that, but they do have a throughline of strength,” Kelly concluded later in the conversation.
