Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, reportedly encouraged President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race on Wednesday.
The lawmaker made his public remarks one day after The New York Times revealed that he had alerted Democratic donors in Long Island, New York, on Saturday to the possibility that, should Biden be the party’s nominee, the party would likely lose its current Senate majority and be unable to take control of the House of Representatives.
“While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch,” Schiff said.
“And in doing so, secure his legacy of leadership by allowing us to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election,” he continued.
Schiff is one of the most well-known Democrats to publicly urge Biden to withdraw from the race following the president’s appalling performance in the late June debate against the Republican nominee, Trump.
Despite worries that his mental clarity has declined during his three years in the White House, Biden has been steadfast since that debate in declaring he will not withdraw.
