On Thursday, Representative Seth Moulton (Mass.) reportedly became the third Democratic member of the House to openly urge President Biden to withdraw from the presidential contest following his lackluster debate performance the previous week, which alarmed his friends.
“President Biden has done enormous service to our country, but now is the time for him to follow in one of our founding father, George Washington’s, footsteps and step aside to let new leaders rise up and run against [former President Trump],” Moulton said during a recent radio appearance.
“When your current strategy isn’t working, it’s rarely the right decision to double down. President Biden is not going to get younger,” Moulton continued in a statement on Wednesday.
As doubts about Biden’s ability to lead the Democratic ticket persist, Moulton, a rival to Biden for the 2020 presidential candidacy, stated on Wednesday that his party should consider “all viable possibilities.”
Biden is staying in the presidential campaign, the White House insisted on Wednesday, and party leaders have openly endorsed him. In an email sent on Wednesday for fundraising, Biden stated that no one “is pushing” him “out” of the race.
Nevertheless, this week saw a break in the Democrats’ backing for Biden. Democratic congressmen from the center, Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, have expressed their belief that Trump will defeat Biden in November.
Moulton publicly calls for Biden to drop out of the race, joining his House colleagues Reps. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) and Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariza).
