According to a recent poll, nearly one-third of Democrats think President Biden should withdraw his reelection campaign after his dismal debate performance against former President Trump last week.
Just days after Biden and Trump faced up in the first debate of the 2024 general election season last week, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday revealed that 32% of Democrats believe Biden should abandon his reelection campaign.
Biden’s delivery seemed to halt frequently, and he seemed to lose his train of thought and fumble over his sentences during the ninety-minute discussion.
Some in the Democratic Party became extremely alarmed after the performance, voicing doubts about Biden’s chances of defeating Trump in November and winning a second four-year term.
Only former first lady Michelle Obama outperformed Biden when pollsters included prominent Democrats as possible successors should Biden step down, giving Trump a hypothetical 50 percent to 39 percent edge.
The difference from Vice President Harris’s 42 percent to 43 percent support, or 1 point, was within the poll’s 3.5 percentage point margin of error.
Another replacement candidate, California Governor Gavin Newsom, was trailing Trump by three percentage points, 39 percent to 42 percent, while Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was behind Trump 36 percent to 41 percent.
Since Biden secured a majority of delegates in the primaries, it is not possible to simply remove him from office during the Democratic National Convention in August.
He has the final say in the matter, and the Biden campaign declared last week that, at least so far, he is not planning on abandoning his campaign.
1,070 American people countrywide were polled online from July 1–2, as part of the Reuters/Ipsos survey with a 3.5 percentage point margin of error.
