House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) expressed concern and raised the possibility of contempt proceedings against Georgia’s Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) regarding a subpoena seeking information about her use of federal funds.
Willis’s office has already provided information in response to the February subpoena.
However, the GOP leader is expressing dissatisfaction, claiming that she did not hand over documents pertaining to allegations made by a former employee who reported another former employee’s intention to misuse federal grant money.
The allegations revolve around a former employee of Willis who claimed that she was terminated shortly after expressing concerns about a Willis campaign aide who became a county employee.
“We appreciate that you have produced a narrow set of documents in response to the subpoena, but your compliance with the subpoena to date is deficient. If you fail to do so, the Committee will consider taking further action, such as the invocation of contempt of Congress proceedings.” Jordan wrote in a letter to Willis.
The employee had intentions of using federal grants for purposes unrelated to a youth violence and gang prevention program.
It’s uncertain whether the federal funds in question were ultimately misused.
In a recording of the whistleblower’s conversation with Willis, the district attorney acknowledges that the other employee’s intentions to use grant money for laptops and “swag” would be inappropriate.
Willis firmly denied any wrongdoing when the subpoena was initially issued in February.
Thursday’s letter from Jordan suggests that his primary focus is on obtaining documents that may be relevant to the whistleblower’s allegations.
