On Thursday, tensions escalated on the Senate floor as Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) questioned Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) regarding his reasoning for opposing the progress of the border security agreement she negotiated.
In response, Graham characterized the agreement as a “half-assed” endeavor to ensure border security.
“Here is what I’m saying. This has been a half-ass effort to deal with border security,” Graham said.
Sinema appeared displeased with Graham’s vote to prevent the border agreement from even being raised for debate on the Senate floor, given that Graham, his staff, Sens. James Lankford (R-Oklahoma), and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) collaborated in what she termed a “integral” way in formulating the bipartisan agreement.
Graham was called upon by Sinema to provide an explanation for his vote to halt the passage of the measure, which encompassed additional expenditures on foreign policy, such as aid for Israel and Ukraine.
Sinema subsequently inquired as to why he prevented the measure from reaching the floor, thereby preventing his colleagues from presenting amendments that would have enhanced it.
At that moment, pyrotechnics began to illuminate the sky.
Graham expressed his belief that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) would not have afforded him an opportunity to present amendments with viable prospects of passage.
He then succinctly summarized the situation.
This reprimand did not set well with Sinema, who collaborated with her fellow negotiators over the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day breaks to draft the 250-page border agreement.
She attempted to ask Graham a number of follow-up questions, but her South Carolina colleague refused to yield the floor and expressed his ire over the bill’s secretive drafting in an impassioned voice.
