In a letter that he has sent to Chinese government officials, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has now reportedly asked for Beijing’s assistance in reducing the amount of fentanyl that enters Mexico.
At a press conference, López Obrador said that he had written to the Chinese after receiving encouragement from authorities in the United States to communicate with Beijing during a recent visit to the country.
“We come to you, President Xi Jinping, not to ask for your support in the face of these rude threats, but to request that for humanitarian reasons, you help us control shipments of fentanyl that can be sent from China to our country.” Obrador said.
“Unjustly, they are blaming us for problems that in large measure have to do with their loss of values, their welfare crisis. These positions are in themselves a lack of respect and a threat to our sovereignty, and moreover they are based on an absurd, manipulative, propagandistic and demagogic attitude.” he continued.
In his letter, he expressed his displeasure with the United States and the alleged threats made by officials from that country on the possibility of designating Mexican drug gangs as terrorist organizations.
In previous statements, López Obrador was adamant in claiming that Mexico does not generate any of the fentanyl that is ravaging communities in the United States.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, each year millions of dollars’ worth of tablets that have been adulterated with fentanyl are smuggled into the United States from Mexico (DEA).
A significant portion of this originates from drug labs that are operated by two of the most powerful and vicious cartels in Mexico.
