Joy Reid Accuses Trump of Wanting to ‘Kill Young White Men’ Over Iran War

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Friday, accusing him of pursuing military policies that she claimed target young white men while condemning his administration’s handling of the ongoing war in Iran.

Speaking on The Joy Reid Show, Reid argued that the conflict, combined with what she described as the administration’s changes to the military, demonstrated that Trump “only wants to kill young white men.”

Referring to the fighting in Iran, Reid said the full human cost of the conflict remains unclear.

“We don’t even know how many people have died in Iran,” Reid said before turning her criticism toward the president.

“Donald Trump is killing your sons,” she continued. “After stripping the history of anybody Black, anybody that’s a woman, or anybody gay from the military, making it clear that he only wants to kill young white men.”
Reid did not specify the particular actions she was referencing during her remarks.

However, in March, The New York Times reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s chief of staff told a military leader that Trump did not “want to stand next to a Black female officer at military events.” Separately, in March 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration could move forward with its policy banning transgender individuals from serving in the military.

Reid also questioned the administration’s transparency regarding casualties connected to the conflict in Iran.
While she said the number of deaths remained uncertain, The New York Times reported last Thursday that the administration removed four American service members from the Pentagon’s public casualty count after determining they had died following the president’s April ceasefire declaration.
The former cable news host went on to warn that she believes the conflict could continue to expand, predicting that additional American troops could become involved.
“And every single young white man that signs up for the military — because that’s the only people they want — that man is going to send you to Iran,” Reid said.
She added that she believes the conflict “is going to escalate” and suggested that “there will be — probably — a ground invasion.”
According to Reid, those who enlist in the military would bear the burden of such an escalation.

“It’s your sons he’s trying to suck in,” she said. “He’s gonna kill your sons and then not tell you how they died.”
Reid concluded her remarks by drawing a broader comparison between the current political climate and historical racial violence.

“Donald Trump is presiding over what feels like a return of lynching, or at least lynching culture, or at least the lynching vibe all across the South,” she said.
The comments marked another pointed criticism from Reid of Trump’s administration and its military policies, as she connected the president’s handling of the war in Iran with broader concerns she raised about changes affecting the armed forces.

Her remarks centered on the administration’s military decisions, casualty reporting, and what she characterized as the consequences of those policies for Americans who choose to serve.
