California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom described the U.S. Department of Justice investigation into her and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s finances as a “fishing expedition” during her first public comments on the matter, while appearing to pause when asked whether the inquiry began during the Biden administration.
Siebel Newsom made the remarks during an interview with Stephanie Ruhle on MS NOW’s Money, Power, Politics with Stephanie Ruhle, where she was asked about the ongoing federal investigation.
Asked directly about the probe, Siebel Newsom argued that the investigation reflects a broader pattern of political retaliation.
“I mean, this is typical Trump fashion. Go after your enemies,” she said. “And so you’d have to ask the DOJ.”
She then shifted the conversation to promote her latest documentary.
The interview took a different turn when Ruhle asked about reports indicating that the Department of Justice investigation had actually begun under former President Joe Biden’s administration.
According to the article, Siebel Newsom remained silent for approximately six seconds, blinking several times before offering a response.
Ruhle prefaced the question by saying that the Trump administration has used the Department of Justice to pursue investigations and prosecutions involving individuals President Donald Trump views as political opponents.
She then asked, “But is it true that this investigation started during the Biden administration?”
Siebel Newsom responded that she was not familiar with the details surrounding the origins of the investigation.
“You know, I don’t know the details,” she said.
She went on to argue that Trump had been targeting her husband even while Biden was serving as president and seeking reelection.
“I do know that, you know, Trump was coming after my husband when back when Biden was, was president and Biden was running for the presidency,” she said.
Siebel Newsom said she found that situation ironic before reiterating her belief that the investigation lacks merit.
“So, look, this is a fishing expedition,” she said.
She suggested that if the investigation has been underway for an extended period, it only reinforces her broader point.
“And I think what you’re saying is that it’s just been going on for a long time,” she told Ruhle.
Siebel Newsom also argued that Gov. Gavin Newsom has frequently been the target of political attacks because of his criticism of President Trump.
“My husband is Trump’s most outspoken critic,” she said, adding that Republicans have consistently targeted him.
She further claimed that conservative media organizations have played a role in those attacks.
“Whether it’s the GOP themselves or, you know, their media empire with Rupert Murdoch and the like, we’re just, you know, kind of sitting ducks in that regard,” she said.
According to Siebel Newsom, she believes her husband’s perceived presidential ambitions have made both him and those closest to him targets.
“They think that my husband’s aspiring for the presidency and they want to silence him, and therefore they go after his wife and those close to him,” she said.
The article notes that federal prosecutors in Sacramento opened a criminal investigation last year into former Gavin Newsom aide Dana Williamson during the Biden administration.
According to the article, Gov. Newsom was not implicated in that investigation.
Williamson later pleaded guilty in May to fraud and other charges.
The interview marked Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s first public comments addressing the Justice Department investigation, with her appearance focusing largely on her contention that the inquiry is politically motivated while declining to address questions about when it originated.
