A CNN panel discussion on President Donald Trump's immigration policies boiled over this week when Ana Navarro asked conservative commentator Scott Jennings point-blank, "Do you care about White people murdering Black people?"
The exchange came on CNN's NewsNight. Guest host Lulu Garcia-Navarro raised polls showing broad disapproval of ICE's deportation tactics. Jennings conceded that many people object to the current mass deportation efforts, but he defended the president for delivering on exactly what he promised voters on immigration.
"If you're an American citizen or you're here with legal status and you've not come here and broken our laws, you have nothing to worry about," Jennings said. He noted that millions of people crossed the border during the Biden years.
"The Trump administration was elected in part to deport as many of the people who have broken our laws as possible," he continued. "I'm not disputing that it is an issue for some people. I don't dispute the poll numbers, but the president was elected to enforce the law."
Navarro fired back by pointing to Marimar Martinez, a U.S. citizen now suing the federal government. Martinez was shot multiple times by an ICE agent in Chicago after he allegedly rammed his vehicle into her car.
"There's plenty of U.S. citizens who look like me, sound like me, who have been dragged through the streets, who have been punched, who have been shot, who have been wounded," Navarro said. "So if you are a Latino and you see the racial profiling that's going on by ICE, you see the thuggery, you see the tactics, you most definitely have a reason to be afraid."
Jennings answered with an example of his own: Sheridan Gorman, a teenage girl in Chicago who was killed by an illegal immigrant.
Navarro was not having it.
"Do you know what the difference is? What's happening here is being done by the government, not by the criminal," she said.
Jennings accused Navarro of trying to "anecdote" the debate "to death." She then suggested he only cares about crimes committed by Latinos.
"Do not equate something that is crimes being committed by the government with impunity, with crimes being committed by criminals," Navarro said. "Throw the book at all the criminals, U.S. citizen or not. You're comparing apples and oranges."
Jennings did not back down.
"You brought up, you're bringing up something you don't like. And I'm bringing up the murder of U.S. citizen which you don't seem to care about," he said.
That is when Navarro escalated.
"No. Do you care about White people murdering Black people? Do you care about the victims in the churches, when White people go in. Why is it that every time we talk about this issue, you guys want to bring up Latino criminals?" she asked.
Jennings made clear he was talking only about "illegal alien criminals."
"Deport them, throw the book at them," Navarro said of that group.
"We are," Jennings replied.
Navarro got the last word, drawing a sharp line between criminals and federal agents.
"There is a huge difference between the government doing this with badges, with impunity, dragging U.S. citizens through the streets and shooting them," she said.
